Overview

LIFE 20/20 offers school and community-based behavioral health services. Our view of behavior includes addressing nutrition and access to “living food” as one of many social determinants of health. Traditionally, nutritional has not always been viewed with a socio-cultural, physical, and historical lens and its relationships to habits and behavior. We address that and connect the historical roots to the contemporary manifestations of dis-ease, via adaptive and maladaptive behavioral patterns.

School and Community-Based Behavioral Health Services are:

  • Competency-focused.

  • Offered during the instructional school day, after school, and in the community.

  • Conducive to sharing, and in some cases co-creating music.

  • Informed by best practices and peer-reviewed research.

training and outreach

LIFE 20/20 also offers Training and Outreach services under the brand name: Project AHEAD [Addressing Health, Education, and Disparities]. We train in the implementation of our programs, techniques that support our approach to behavioral health, and customizing and integrating our courses. Our unique approach to curriculum, instruction, enrichment, and therapy requires training and certification to achieve the outcomes specified. The use popular youth music and media in the classroom is tricky. Without training and being clear about one’s intentions, this approach may go wrong quickly, potentially producing very different results than intended. Training is critical and required.

Collectively, we have been paying attention to how to engage children and adolescents for a long time. We know what works with young people and have gained much insight into how words, sounds, and images in music and media can be used for prosocial purposes. We have worked at the intersection of science, technology, entrepreneurship, art and music [STEAM] for nearly two decades. We have seen the impact of popular youth music and media on young people over these years, hence why we require certification, written consent, and a licensing agreement to use of any of our materials or software. Unauthorized use of any LIFE 20/20 intellectual property is strictly prohibited by state, federal, and international laws. Our intellectual property is embedded in our courses, programs, software ,or training, and associated materials.

Engagement matters!

Are youth engaged by our approach to teaching and learning?

■ When engaged, young people welcome an intellectual challenge.

■ When engaged, young people ask questions and seek clarification.

■ When engaged, young people are respectful of divergent perspectives and seek first to understand vs seeking first to be understood.

Would engagement improve if we used pop music for instructional purposes?

When invited to have these discussions, young people are willing to share and examine their ideas and perspectives about popular youth music and media.

When taught, young people can learn to appreciate the range of points of view as this gives them an opportunity to clarify their own values.

Who might benefit from arts-infused, integrated instruction?

When engaged, young people are more likely to embrace a growth mindset and see the benefits of acquiring knowledge that can be applied to solving problems.

■ When engaged, young people are looking for ways to connect what they learn in school with life outside of school and beyond.
